After a lively night at Pub Street, sipping a few too many Mojitos and waking up with a "bit" of a hangover, I knew I needed some fresh air and a gentle walk to shake off the cobwebs. So, I decided to make my way back to the Angkor Botanical Gardens for a second visit.

Tucked away on the outskirts of the city, the Angkor Botanical Gardens are a true hidden gem that often goes unnoticed by tourists. This lush oasis offers a peaceful escape from the bustling crowds of Siem Reap and a unique opportunity to connect with Cambodia's diverse flora and fauna

Upon entering the Angkor Botanical Gardens, you're instantly transported into a world of serenity and natural beauty. Unlike the busy streets of Siem Reap, this botanical paradise is a sanctuary of peace. Spanning a vast 15 hectares and potentially expanding to 130 hectares with future development , the gardens showcase Cambodia's remarkable ecological diversity, featuring an extensive collection of plant species from all corners of the country.

The gardens are thoughtfully divided into several themed sections, each offering a glimpse into a different aspect of Cambodia's natural heritage. Here are some of the highlights that you definitely shouldn't miss:

1. The Orchid Garden: Begin your journey with a visit to the Orchid Garden, where you'll be greeted by an enchanting display of Cambodia's native orchid species. These delicate and vibrant flowers are truly a sight to behold, and the knowledgeable staff is always ready to answer your questions about these remarkable plants.

2. Medicinal and Aromatic Plants: Explore the secrets of medicinal and aromatic plants in this section of the gardens. Here, you'll learn about the traditional uses of plants in Cambodian medicine and cuisine. The captivating scents and healing properties of these plants will captivate your senses.

3. Lotus Pond: The lotus flower holds deep cultural significance in Cambodia, symbolising purity and enlightenment. Take a leisurely stroll around the Lotus Pond and admire the serene beauty of these iconic flowers. It's the perfect spot for reflection and relaxation.

4. Rainforest Trees: If you have an appreciation for the towering trees of tropical climates, you'll be in awe of the diverse collection in these gardens. And while you're wandering through this micro jungle, why not pay a visit to the small zoo within the gardens, which houses a collection of wildlife and livestock?

One of the most admirable aspects of the Angkor Botanical Gardens is its commitment to conservation and education. During my visits, I was heartened to see numerous school excursions taking place. Managed by the Apsara National Authority, these gardens play a vital role in preserving Cambodia's biodiversity and educating visitors about the importance of protecting our natural heritage. The staff conducts informative guided tours, workshops, and educational programs for both locals and tourists.

Moreover, the Angkor Botanical Gardens actively contribute to the local economy and support nearby communities. They collaborate with local farmers and artisans, offering visitors the opportunity to purchase authentic Cambodian products such as honey, handmade soaps, and traditional crafts. In doing so, they help improve the livelihoods of local families.

For practical information, the Angkor Botanical Gardens are located approximately 25 minutes from the centre of Siem Reap on Charles de Gaul Boulevard. Most tuk-tuk drivers in the city are familiar with the route, or you can easily book a PassApp for just a few dollars.

The gardens typically operate from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, (Closed on Mondays) though it's a good idea to check their website or call ahead for any changes in operating hours. At the time of writing, entrance to the gardens is free, making it an affordable and worthwhile excursion.

While Siem Reap's temples are undoubtedly the city's main attraction, the Angkor Botanical Gardens offer a refreshing change of pace. It's a place where you can immerse yourself in Cambodia's natural beauty, learn about its rich plant heritage, and support conservation efforts that benefit both the environment and local communities. So, the next time you find yourself in Siem Reap, be sure to set aside some time to explore this hidden gem and experience the wonders of the Angkor Botanical Gardens.
